Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ZeroPlastic Commitment (ZPC) Standard, and why should we pursue it?
The ZeroPlastic Commitment (ZPC) Standard is a forward-thinking certification program designed to help organizations systematically reduce plastic usage at the source. It encourages practices such as avoidance, reduction, reuse, and responsible disposal of plastics. The standard is well-suited for organizations aiming to strengthen their sustainability leadership, enhance brand reputation, and stay aligned with emerging global plastic regulations.
What types of organizations or facilities are eligible to apply?
Organizations such as hotels, restaurants, offices, educational institutions, and manufacturing plants are eligible to apply. The standard is applicable to both single-site and multi-site facilities, as long as plastic usage can be independently assessed and managed at each location.
What are the ZPC Commitment Levels?
There are three certification levels:
Level 1 (Silver): Requires foundational efforts in plastic consumption reduction, with a primary focus on eliminating Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) efforts.
Level 2 (Gold): Builds upon Level 1 achievements, requiring strategic and sustained progress in plastic reduction.
Level 3 (Platinum):Represents the highest standard of commitment to plastic reduction and sustainable management.
What are the first steps to enroll in the ZPC certification process?
Organizations should begin by contacting the ZeroPlastic Commitment (ZPC) team to confirm their eligibility. Once eligibility is verified, they can proceed with the self-assessment process, which serves as the foundation for planning and implementing plastic reduction strategies.
Do we need to eliminate all plastics immediately?
No. The ZPC Standard follows a phased approach to plastic reduction. To achieve Level 1, organizations focus primarily on identifying and reducing single-use plastics (SUPs). As they progress toward higher certification levels, they are expected to further reduce other forms of plastic consumption in a structured and measurable way. This allows for continuous improvement rather than requiring immediate elimination.
What kind of support or guidance is provided during implementation?
The ZPC Implementation Manual offers detailed explanations, step-by-step guidance, templates, and best practices. Certified consultants or internal sustainability leads can guide your progress, and the Certification Body provides interpretations and reviews your plans.
What happens if we can’t fully eliminate certain plastics due to operational or safety constraints?
Organizations must conduct a Product Risk Assessment to justify continued use and present evidence of effort toward eventual substitution. Interim use of certified compostable or recyclable alternatives is encouraged.
How long does it take to get certified?
Most organizations reach Level 1 certification within 3 to 12 months, depending on their current plastic use and internal readiness. The process begins with a baseline assessment, followed by the development and implementation of your Plastic Reduction Plan (PRP). With clear guidance and structured milestones, even small steps lead to significant progress — and our team is here to support you at every stage.
